RJ Fellowship
Funding challenges continue to impact the humanities and social sciences. CAS is therefore particularly happy for its partnership with Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ). RJ's generous donation gave rise to the Nordic Fellowship Program which enables SSH scholars from Swedish research institutions to become RJ Fellows and enjoy a fully paid residential fellowship at CAS.
The donation from RJ gives an exceptional opportunity not only to the RJ fellow but also to CAS Research Grant (CRG) projects within social science and humanities. The RJ Fellows will contribute to their research, without adding costs to their CAS budget. Our first RJ Fellow joined CAS in August 2025, and the feedback from the host research group has been overwhelmingly positive.
RJ Fellows will stay for one semester and must relocate to Oslo for the research period. There is normally one slot each semester.
RJ fellows will receive a fully paid sabbatical, with all administrative arrangements managed by CAS. The fellowship covers accommodation and travel to and from the researcher’s home institution in Sweden and provides the fellow with the same exceptional academic environment, support, and resources as all CAS fellows.
If you're preparing a CRG application and have an established connection with a Swedish scholar - or know someone who would be a great fit - we strongly encourage you to include them as an RJ Fellow in your project and application. Please note that if the PI includes the RJ Fellow directly in their CRG application the fellow must be a core member of the group. Adding an RJ Fellow to your team offers several benefits. It:
- strengthens your Nordic network, by including a researcher from a Swedish institution.
- increases the competitiveness and visibility of your project through the support from RJ, a prestigious Swedish research foundation.
- expands your team at no additional cost, as the RJ Fellow is fully funded and does not affect your project budget.
if none of the selected projects have planned to include RJ Fellows, CAS will proceed with an open call. The selection will be based on scientific quality, the applicant’s merits, the project’s alignment with CAS’ mission as well as the match with the CRG projects and cohort of fellows.
Eligibility
An RJ Fellow must:
- Have completed a PhD and hold a tenured academic position in the humanities and/or social sciences at a Swedish research institution.
- If the application is received through an open call the applicant must have a research experience of a minimum of 4 years.
