Abstract
Shifting Grounds; The Anthropology of Terraformation will radically expand the theoretical and methodological tools of anthropology in a way that is relevant for urgent socio-ecological crises. With a focus on landscape features such as ditches, river systems, rocks, soil, aquifers and aerial space, the project places non-living earthly formations at the center of anthropological attention. Bridging multispecies ethnography with more recent advances in relation to the abiotic realm, the project will explore landforms as intertwined imaginative, material, biotic and abiotic processes. The project draws on ethnographic insights from diverse fieldsites and continents from the Arctic to the Mediterranean, from the Americas to South Africa.
